Transit
By no coincidence with this project, today, 4 inches of rain fell in one hour, flooding and crippling the subway system. For me it conjured memories of the transit strike in winter 2005, during which I was forced to walk 2 hours each way, to and from work (in double-jackets, long underwear, and 2 pairs of wool socks). On the third day of the strike (the day I was to leave on vacation), I packed up all the wrapped Christmas presents for my family and wheeled them across the Manhattan Bridge at 5:30 in the morning. It was an iconic moment for me in NY. I learned the order and perimeters of Brooklyn neighborhoods and discovered many favorite businesses and restaurants that otherwise I'd probably still not be aware of. I love not driving. And while I can claim that my footprint on the earth is smaller than most Americans, I mostly revel in being able to tackle a book-a-week while passing under the East river each day. These images are of historic cars parked in the NY Transit Museum. Posted On: August 18, 2007 |
